Before you move forward, I want you to know that organizing your closet and keeping it organized is not just a one-time thing but an ongoing process. However, if you follow the guide below, you will find it easier to keep your closet organized.

1. Declutter your Clothes

An easy way to do this is to separate them into categories (pant, tops, dresses, outer wear, etc.). This way it won’t seem like a lot. At this time, I also like to try the clothes on to make sure they fit. Then, you can decide if you want to keep, giveaway/donate or sell them.

2. Empty and clean your closet/drawers

Remove any and everything that’s in the closet and make sure to clean it properly. By this I mean, wiping down the shelves, vacuum the carpet and replacing any bins or storage.

3. Store your clothes and accessories by category

Set up designated areas in your closet for each category of clothing and accessories. This will make it easy for you to find what you need when you need them. In addition, this will make your closet look more organized. If you are using drawers, do the same! Put like pieces in the same drawer.

4. Wash/clean and store clothes that you are not wearing right now.

This will give you enough room for the things you are using now, and your closet won’t feel so clustered because it is jam packed. To do this you can buy storage bins, make sure clothes are clean and neatly fold. Stack them in the bins and store them away.

5. Keep your most used clothes close by

Your most used clothes should be easy to reach. This way you don’t have to be digging and pulling down pieces to get to them.

6. Hang fancy and delicate pieces

These pieces include dresses, skirts, suits and structured pieces like a blazer or coat. If you have enough room, you can always hang not so fancy pieces like your t-shirt and leggings. And if you are a neat freak like me, make sure to have all the hangers turning in the same direction.

Whatever it is, the way you tell your story online can make all the difference.

7. Use coordinating hangers

In my closet I use sturdy velvet hangers, they hold even my heavy coats, and I don’t have to worry about the clothes slipping off. Make sure they are the same color and not different colors clashing. That’s definitely not appealing.

8. Stack thick items

Save space in your drawers and hanging space by folding thick and bulky items such as denim and sweaters. This is a great way to use up your shelf space and not worry about your hangers breaking or your drawers can’t close.

9. Roll t-shirts and smaller items

Things like t-shirts, pajamas, workout clothes, and leggings can be rolled and stored in boxes or drawers. They are thin and rolling them will free up a ton of space that you can use to store other items.

10. Color-code your wardrobe

This will make finding your pieces so much easier. Once you remember the color, you can go straight to that section. It may be hard to get it together at first but I am sure that once it’s done your life will be easier.

11. Make use of your door and empty walls

You can always buy a shoe hanger to install over the door so you can store shoes. The empty walls can be used for fedoras, handbags or jewelry.

12. Use drawer dividers

Make your drawer both functional and aesthetically pleasing by using draw dividers. They are especially great for organizing undergarments, socks and smaller items in your closet. You can even use them to help your kid/s organize their drawers. And again, you will be saving on space that you can use for something else.
